BBC unveils new logo for BBC THREE

(London, UK, October 2002) - BBC THREE, the newly approved digital channel due to launch early next year, has revealed its logo.

Developed by Matt Penney, Designer, Lambie-Nairn, the logo will fulfil a variety of roles on and off air as well as on the website, in interactive television and on all written materials.

It is the first part of the BBC THREE brand identity to be revealed.

Stuart Murphy, Controller, BBC Choice says: "The creatives at Lambie-Nairn have done a really good job. Hopefully viewers are starting to get a sense that BBC THREE is going to inhabit a completely separate space in the multi channel world - one which is about being multi-culturally British, about nurturing new talent and about encouraging and guiding creative risk."

Charlotte Castle, Creative Director, Lambie-Nairn says: "The logotype is one element of the BBC THREE brand identity, and the slanted three gives our designers the potential to develop in three dimensions.

"We are very excited about developing this and revealing the rest of the brand identity nearer to launch."

The logo is free standing at all times apart from on screen and when it sits alongside the other channels in the portfolio.

BBC THREE is a digital channel aimed at young adults, with a rich mixed contemporary schedule.

It will bring the best in new entertainment, comedy, contemporary drama and music to this young adult audience.

Enshrined in its multi-genre, public service remit is a strong commitment to Factual, News, Current Affairs, Science, Business and Ethics.

BBC THREE will be an inherently multicultural, interactive channel with 80% of programmes specially commissioned for the channel, and 90% of programming will be made in the UK.

At least, one quarter of the BBC THREE programme budget will be spent on independent productions.
